Disciplining the Soul
Author - Ibn Al Jawzi "Know that all the facets of mankind's disposition are for their benefit - either directly such as the desire for food, or indirectly by preventing harm, such as the capacity for anger. However, when these natural impulses are not moderated it culminates in harm. If the desire for food is excessive it leads to gluttony. Similarly when anger is uncontrolled it leads to transgression. The aim should be to achieve equilibrium of the soul, to allow the faithful to approach God without distraction. The author addresses many spiritual diseases - such as envy, greed, uncontrolled lust, sexual desire, arrogance, gluttony, anger, stinginess, extravagance, vanity and attachment to this world. He also discusses the qualities that the seeker of God must acquire - such as love, self discipline, humility, self-criticism, improvement of character, patience and truthfulness. In a simple yet effective way he shows the wayfarers how to cure their spiritual diseases and acquire the necessary qualities for their journey to Allah. This masterpiece has been divided into thirty chapters to facilitate the reader's comprehension. Important points are highlighted using anecdotes from the early righteous predecessors. The author, Ibn al-Jawzi (d. 597 AH), was an learned scholar possessing extensive knowledge. While still young, he became known as someone who was religious and given to learning. He would not waste his time in idle activities and would scrupulously avoid any food whose source was doubtful. He was a great preacher and his fame was widespread; many people repented and accepted Islam at his hands. He was also a prolific writer and authored over one thousand works encompassing a multitude of Islamic disciplines and sciences."

Knowledge & Its Effect on Purifying Souls
Author:Shaykh 'Abdur-razzaq al-abad From the book: Purifying the souls is important in this time of temptations. Which may turn one away from good deeds and make indulge in evil deeds. Abdullah ibn Al-Mubarak, on of the successors of the Prophet's companions, said in his time, "In the past, the righteous people were doing good deeds voluntarily. Our own selves, unfortunately, do good deeds with reluctance; and hence we should force ourselves to do good deeds." He said this at a time [of righteousness], what about our era when some temptations and seductions prevent one from worship.

10 principles Concerning Purification of Soul
10 principles Concerning Purification of Soul by Abdur Razzaq al-Abbad Since purifying the soul has this level of importance, it is obligatory upon each Muslim who desires good for himself to give great importance to this matter and to struggle against his soul in his life to actualize this praiseworthy goal; in order that he may be successful in his worldly life and his hereafter, and so that he may enjoy true happiness. The soul has a right upon the Muslim, as the messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) has said: وان لنفسك عليك حقاً “Indeed, your soul has a right upon you.” He has erred who believes that the right of the soul is that one is harsh upon it and deprives it of its rights that Allah has created is with an innate need for. Likewise, he has erred who believes that the right of the soul is that one is negligent and neglectful of its management and leaves it drowning in its lusts, and the likes. Purification of the soul is totally different from the likes of this. Rather, purification of the soul is by way of the legislative methods, balance, and moderation, such that there is neither negligence nor exaggeration. Instead, it is by clinging to the guidance of the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and his firm methodology. I will mention, within this concise work, ten importance principles which will assist the Muslim in purifying and strengthening his soul as well as cleansing it from everything which would sully and defile it.

Disturber of the Hearts
Author - Ibn Al-Jawzi The discerning scholar is adept at diagnosing the various spiritual illnesses resulting from sins, and treating the malaise in the heart. If he finds a person falling into despair, he tries to ignite the spark of hope in his heart. If, on the other hand, he sees that one is in a reckless and fearless state, he works to instil the fear of Allah in his heart.

At Their Feet Piety Towards Parents
Ibn Al-Jawzi | Dar As-Sunnah Islām has gone to great lengths in impressing piety towards parents and indicating reward and punishment associated to it. A person with basic common sense understands the rights of the one who renders favours to him; not recognising such rights is from the most deprived qualities one can assume. A person who is dutiful and good to his parents should know that no matter how diligent he is towards them, he can never repay or thank them for their rights and privileges granted to them by Allāh.

Awaking From the Sleep of the Heedlessness
Author - Ibn Al-Jawzi There are those who submit to Allah's order and achieve success. Others are wasteful of time and thereby loss and regret. Whoever lives his life in accordance with Allahs commands, will be rewarded handsomely with multiplied profits beyond imagination. The corrupt one who acts contrarily to Divine Pleasure will be destroyed. This fourth masterpiece in the series expounds on the five stages of life: the first stage of encouraging and disciplining; the second stage of youthfulness, protecting the self and struggling against desires; the third of maturity; the fourth stage of old age; the fifth stage of decrepitude. The onset of these periods may vary slightly from person to person. Nonetheless these five stages are true. This is truly a work of genius.
