Author - Ibn Al Jawzi "Know that all the facets of mankind's disposition are for their benefit - either directly such as the desire for food, or indirectly by preventing harm, such as the capacity for anger. However, when these natural impulses are not moderated it culminates in harm. If the desire for food is excessive it leads to gluttony. Similarly when anger is uncontrolled it leads to transgression. The aim should be to achieve equilibrium of the soul, to allow the faithful to approach God without distraction. The author addresses many spiritual diseases - such as envy, greed, uncontrolled lust, sexual desire, arrogance, gluttony, anger, stinginess, extravagance, vanity and attachment to this world. He also discusses the qualities that the seeker of God must acquire - such as love, self discipline, humility, self-criticism, improvement of character, patience and truthfulness. 10 principles Concerning Purification of Soul by Abdur Razzaq al-Abbad Since purifying the soul has this level of importance, it is obligatory upon each Muslim who desires good for himself to give great importance to this matter and to struggle against his soul in his life to actualize this praiseworthy goal; in order that he may be successful in his worldly life and his hereafter, and so that he may enjoy true happiness. The soul has a right upon the Muslim, as the messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) has said: وان لنفسك عليك حقاً “Indeed, your soul has a right upon you.” He has erred who believes that the right of the soul is that one is harsh upon it and deprives it of its rights that Allah has created is with an innate need for. Likewise, he has erred who believes that the right of the soul is that one is negligent and neglectful of its management and leaves it drowning in its lusts, and the likes. Purification of the soul is totally different from the likes of this. Rather, purification of the soul is by way of the legislative methods, balance, and moderation, such that there is neither negligence nor exaggeration. Instead, it is by clinging to the guidance of the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and his firm methodology. I will mention, within this concise work, ten importance principles which will assist the Muslim in purifying and strengthening his soul as well as cleansing it from everything which would sully and defile it.

(And) a portion of it was barren which could neither hold the water nor bring forth vegetation (then that land gave no benefits). The first is the example of the person who comprehends ALLAH’s Religion (Islam) and gets benefit (from the knowledge) which ALLAH (Azawajal) has revealed through me (the Prophet صلی الله علیه وآله وسلم) and learns and then teaches it to others. The (last example is that of a) person who does not care for it and does not take ALLAH’s Guidance revealed through me (he is like that barren land).” (Al-Mukarramah)

Author:ibn taymiyyah "Know O beloved reader that it is most important to spend one's time and energy in treating the heart, and hastening to correct and purify it from sickness and all sins. This is due to the heart occupying a great and lofty position in Islaam, for it is the place to which the Lord looks and the storehouse for tawheed, faith, and sincerity. Actions are distinguished, one from the other, with respect to their excellence in the Sight of Allah in accordance with the condition of the heart, not by their number or form, but rather due to the strength of the caller, his or her truthfulness, his or her sincerity and the extent to which he or she prefers Allah over himself or herself. Al-Haafidh ibn Hajr al-Asqalaanee, said: "The heart has been singled out for this because it is the leader of the body, and through the purification of the leader the subjects become purified, and with his corruption they become corrupted. So if you, O servant of Allah, with to cure your heart then it is upon you to be truthful with regards to seeking refuge with Allah and putting your trust in Him, to pray a great deal of superogatory prayers, to perform the actions of obedience to Allah frequently, to pray the night prayer while the people are sleeping, and to treat your heart by making it continuously stick to the remembrances and by befriending only the righteous ... and to frequently recite the Qur'an. And Allah will indeed allow all of this to be preserved by him."

The following are excerpts from the text: “The basis of īmān (faith) is loving for Allāh’s sake and hating for Allāh’s sake, so the one who loves for Allāh, hates for Allāh, gives for Allāh, and withholds for Allāh, has completed his īmān.” “… and Allāh, the Most High, said: ﴿وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يَتَّخِذُ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ أَندَادًا يُحِبُّونَهُمْ كَحُبِّ اللَّهِ ۖ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَشَدُّ حُبًّا لِّلَّهِ﴾ ‘And of mankind are some who take (for worship) others besides Allāh as rivals (to Allāh). They love them as they love Allāh. But those who believe love Allāh more (than anything else).’ [Sūrah al-Baqarah 2:165]” “…and the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ said: ثلاث من كن فيه وجد بهن حلاوة الإيمان: أن يكون الله ورسوله أحب إليه مما سواهما، وأن يحب المرء لا يحبه إلا لله، وأنيكره أن يعود في الكفر بعد أن أنقذه الله منه، كما يكره أن يقذف في النار. ‘There are three qualities, whoever has them will taste the sweetness of īmān: to love Allāh and His Messenger ﷺ more than anyone else; to love a person only for the sake of Allāh; and to hate to return to disbelief after Allāh has saved him from it, as much as he would hate to be thrown into the Fire.’” “…So every movement and every action in the world is based on love and desire, and every love or desire that is not based on the love for Allāh and the desire to see His Face is futile and corrupt.

Author's Note: This book is an abridgement of my earlier work entitled, Adh-Dhikr wad-Du'a wal-'llaj bir-Ruqyah mina'-Kitab was-Sunnah. In order to make it small and easily portable, I have chosen only the section on words of remembrance for this abridgement. To achieve this, I only mentioned the text of the words of remembrance instead of the entire Hadith. I also limited myself to mentioning only one or two references from the original book for each Hadith. Whoever would like to know about the Companion who related a particular Hadith, or more information about where it is recorded, should refer to the original work (mentioned above). I ask Allah the Glorious, the Mighty, by His beautiful Names and by His sublime Attributes to accept this as having been done sincerely for His sake alone. An excellent book, warning us about the dangers of expending our energies in chasing after the transitory things of this world at the expense of the rewards of the Hereafter. it shows the correct perspective that a believer should have of this world in comparison to the Hereafter which is especially important in this age when the people's visions have become so blurred and their priorities mixed up.

On Remembering Death by Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali (translated by Abdullah Ali) is a classic treatise on Islamic spirituality and heart-softening reflections (tazkiyah). Adapted from a section of Ibn Rajab’s work Lata'if al-Ma'arif, the book addresses the spiritual importance of meditating on mortality.

The Three That follow To The Grave In the Sahih of Al Bukhari and muslim ,it is reported that Anas ibn Malik narrated that the Prophet said: ”Three things follow the deseased person (to the grave),two of them return,and only one remains. His family wealth and actions follow him. The family and and wealth return ,but his deeds will remain.”

A Treatise in Condemnation of The Hardness of the Heart The importance of this topic is highlighted by the supplication of the Prophet (sallAllahu alaihi wa sallam) where he sought refuge with Allah from the hardness of the heart: “O Allah, I seek refuge with You from feebleness, laziness, stinginess, cowardice, senility, hardness of the heart], heedlessness, destitution, humiliation and privation. And I seek refuge with You from poverty, disbelief, shirk, disobedience, opposition to the truth, hypocrisy, seeking fame and showing off. And I seek refuge with You from deafness, dumbness, insanity, leukoderma, leprosy, and all chronic diseases.” Al-Allamah al-Shawkani explained al-Qaswah here to mean hardness of the heart to the extent that it does not accept admonition, fear punishment or show mercy to those deserving of it. [Tuhfah al-Dhakirin (p. 358)] Malik b. Dinar said: “A slave has never been punished with anything more severe than hardness of the heart.” In this treatise Al-Hafiz Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali scholastically discusses the dangers of the hardness of the heart, its causes and how it can be treated in light of the Qur’an and the Sunnah.

Characteristics of the Hypocrites By Imam Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah Hypocrisy is a deep rooted and all-pervading spiritual disease. A person’s heart could be overflowing with it yet be oblivious of it due to its hidden and subtle nature; frequently does it lead a person to think they are acting rightly when in reality he is spreading corruption. It is of two types: major and minor; majority hypocrisy leads to eternal punishment in the lowest depths of Hell; it is to outwardly display faith in Allah, His Angles, His Books, His Messengers, and the last Day whereas inwardly one is devoid of such belief, indeed disbelieving in it. They do not believe that Allah spoke to a man amongst men who He appointed to be Messenger: guiding them by His permission and warning them of His punishments. In the Qur’an, Allah has revealed the intrigues of the hypocrites, He has unveiled their belief, their qualities, and made their goals clear so that the believers can be aware of them. He divided mankind into three groups in the beginning of Surah al-Baqarah: the believer, the disbeliever, and hypocrite. He mentioned four verses concerning the believers, two concerning the disbelievers, and thirteen verses concerning the hypocrites, due to their plenitude and the great harm and tribulation they bring to Islam and the Muslims. The harm they cause to Islam is truly sever for they claim to be Muslims, they claim to aid and support Islam, whereas in reality they are its enemies seeking to destroy it from within, covertly spreading their corruption and ignorance such that the unwary thinks that what they are upon is knowledge and right action. By Allah! How many strongholds of Islam have they destroyed; how many fortress have they rendered to ruin; how many signposts of Islam have they effected; how many raised flags have they lowered; and how many seeds of doubt have they attempted to sow in order to uproot the religion! He studied under Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah for sixteen years and accompanied him up and till his death; learning a great deal of knowledge from him. Trials and Tribulations By Imam ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah A believer may face many trials and tribulations to test their faith, patience and endurance. In a world full of conflicts, wars, disasters and many personal and family problems, Shaytan can cause a person to question many things. If a Muslim is tried, in body, wealth, or any other difficulty, the only reason for this is ones sins – due to leaving something obligatory or committing a prohibited act. However it is also a means of Allah aiding His servants, ennobling one and granting well-being. The most severely tried were the Prophets and then those closest to them. The Companions of the Prophet Muhammad (saw) were evicted from their homes, leaving their possessions behind, their enemies multiplied, on occasions they were overcome and defeated, many were martyred. The Messenger of Allah (saw) received injury to his face, his molar teeth was broken; his helmet was crushed into his head, while his enemies rejoiced and his associates despaired. They lived in a constant state of fear, destitution and poverty - tying rocks to their stomachs out of sever hunger. The Messenger of Allah (saw) never ate to his fill of bread twice in any one day. He was injured in various ways to the point that they accused the chastity of his most beloved wife. The state of hardship causes the servant to turn to Allah, Mighty and Magnificent. Often the state of ease, well-being and blessings cause a person to turn away from Allah. In tribulations, trials, misfortunes and calamities lay numerous benefits, having differing degrees of relevance, in accordance to the various ranks of people. The believers are afflicted with tribulation to such an extent that they end up walking on the earth with no trace of sin remaining on them. This amazing work deals with many aspect of trials and tribulations, including realising the greatness of Allah, humility, dejection of servitude, sincerity for Allah, being patient, supplication, expiation of sins and many other benefits and wisdoms. This Iman boosting work will aid every reader and it will develop an understanding that a believer should accustom themselves with, in times of calamities.
